Here we find the Mekong river approaching the border with Cambodia. This stretch of the Mekong marks the western edge and southwestern corner of Champasak, and the Bolaven Plateau, the coffee lands of Laos. The Bolaven Plateau is an incredible tableland with cooler temperatures, abundant rainfall and terrain highly suited for coffee cultivation.
Over the last 10 years, quality coffee on the Bolaven Plateau has come to mean more than a change from Robusta to Arabica. With each passing season, more and more farmers learn about the agronomic and milling practices that produce superior quality worthy of the specialty market.
The Java varietal receives its name from the island of Java in Indonesia. Javas are known for its seeds and berries to be oblong. The shrubs young leaves are bronzed and the trees are known for being highly productive. The varietal itself is known for it's floral qualities, complex cup profile and resistance to coffee leaf rust.
This is a stellar representation of what Laotian coffee can be. Region, climate, terroir, varietal and processing all coalesce to create this fantastic cup.
